Changing Perceptions

It is unfortunate that only one in every four individuals who would benefit from amplification actually acquires a hearing instrument. Improving on this statistic challenges the hearing professional to address commonly held misperceptions.

Much is said about the cosmetics of assistive listening devices, either they don’t work, or are of limited usefulness. Recent advances in technology challenge these perceptions, and do much to rebut the negative sentiment in the community. To communicate these advances is part of the process of turning perceptions around, and help people enjoy the quality of life to which they aspire.

Hearing Aids: The Cold Hard Facts

Cosmetic issues have largely been addressed with the advent of professional fashion designers being at the forefront of product imagery.
Engineers, who work on the inside of a hearing instrument, have focussed their attention on technical performance, which has progressed at an incredibly fast pace. The cosmetic appeal of hearing aids has soared.

Cosmetics

In Australia, the last five years has seen a shift away from custom moulded “in-the-ear” products toward smaller behind-the-ear hearing aids. Ironically, a behind-the-ear instrument is more cosmetically appealing than an in-the-ear device as current designs render them small and light, less visible, and physically more comfortable for the wearer.

For many hearing impaired clients an ear mould is no longer required. The hearing instrument communicates sound to the ear via a visually transparent capillary tube or wire connected to a miniature loudspeaker suspended in an open ear canal.

Functional Convergence

It is now possible with some advanced instruments to connect seamlessly to your mobile/home telephone, stereo, MP3 player and television via blue tooth functionality. This advance in technology has bridged the gap experienced by hearing aid users in undertaking routine daily activities without major effort.

Acoustic Performance

Today nearly all hearing instruments are driven by computer algorithms. Their sound processing chips are designed to process enormous amounts of data.
It is now possible for some hearing instruments to identify if they are listening to music, speech in quiet or speech in noise, by using dual microphones.

When one of these environments is detected, the chip then alters its sound processing to ensure it delivers the ultimate clarity to the wearer. Some digital hearing aids perform this automatically, and they also learn the wearer’s preferences, and apply these the next time that environment is encountered.

Open ear

Advanced feedback cancellation technology has allowed the current generation of hearing instruments to be of an open ear design without experiencing any whistling. This design means that the ear is not blocked with a mould enabling it to breathe and does not impair the natural acoustics of the ear.

Collectively

All things considered, there are numerous features in contemporary instruments that address many of the common misperceptions surrounding the merit and usefulness of hearing aids. Clients with hearing problems will be pleasantly surprised by the improved quality of life that can be brought about by testing the reality.
